While popular culture has shifted somewhat, it's hard not to imagine marriage as something from sitcoms past. At 30, I had become a sexless, nagging old maid, and more or less a supporting character to my husband's antics.
Hentai (Japanese illustrated or animated heterosexual pornography) was a way for me to immerse myself in sexuality without the East Asian fetishization of western culture. While comic books remain popular with different ages in Japan, they are often looked at as books for children in the states. The immaturity of the medium mixed with the complexity of the subject allowed me to explore the inescapable fear that life is over when you get married, and ask why that part of you even has to die.
