Trina Fernandez is a photographic installation artist and bookmaker, speaking to the human experiences we don't often talk about. Shame, guilt, and sadness are at the center of her work, offering a societal critique of standards and the reality of never being able to meet expectations. With the use of popular imagery and artiface, Trina builds on nostalgia by recreating scenes from her past, as a way to connect to the present.

The elaborate displays serve as a front for an underlying story, allowing the viewer to choose how far they want to interact with Trina’s vulnerability. By mimicking the reality of how difficult it is to make a connection with someone, she rewards the viewer for listening, reading, and doing the work with a personal narrative most people would pass by. This similar thought is shared in her artist books and zines, as she asks the reader to figuratively (and sometimes literally) read between the lines, to foster a more personal connection.

Honesty is integral to the work as Trina hopes that by sharing her truth it will allow others to feel safe to do the same without fear or judgement.
